The Power of Role Models – From the Field to Forever

When my 10 year old was little, we lived in Sweden—and we were lucky.
My dad worked then as a skill coach with top players in Allsvenskan (Sweden’s top league) and beyond. At just 5 years old, my son would tag along to training sessions—quietly watching, sometimes helping out, and occasionally getting invited to join in a drill or two.
Those moments? He still remembers them all.
When he turned 8, my dad borrowed the practice field and clubhouse—and we threw a birthday party. And guess who showed up? All four of the pro players my dad was coaching at the time. They sang, ate cake, and even played a match: Pros + kids vs. parents (spoiler: the pros won 😄).
The best part? Each of them brought a jersey with their name and number, gifting it to my son. That day, he chose one number to carry forward—and he still wears # 23, not because of Jordan, but because of one of them.
What they showed him went far beyond one celebration. They taught him that being great isn’t just about showing up for your club—it’s the extra work, the drive to be better, the mindset to push yourself even when no one’s watching.
As a parent, I’m beyond grateful. Because those role models gave my child something we often try to teach ourselves: belief, dedication, and the joy of being seen.
So this one’s a thank you—to all the older players who take time for the kids watching. Who give high-fives, play a few passes, and remind the next generation that they matter.
It makes a difference.
