When my 7-year-old checked his shoulder mid-run during a game, it wasn’t just a proud parent moment—it was a sign he’s starting to see the field differently.
“Shoulder checks” may sound like a small detail, but they make a massive difference in a player’s decision-making and speed of play. Here’s why awareness matters—and how to help your player train it.
Why It Matters:
Better decisions: Players who scan know where teammates and defenders are before they get the ball.
Faster reactions: Scanning improves game speed and reduces hesitation.
More confidence: Knowing what’s around them reduces panic in tight spaces.
How to Train It (Even at Home):
Red Cone, Blue Cone Drill:
Set up two cones behind the player. Before receiving a pass, call out a cone color they must scan and point to first.
“Coach Calls It” Awareness Drill:
While your player dribbles or juggles, shout out visual cues (e.g., “left!” “defender!”) and have them glance quickly in that direction while maintaining control.
Juggling with Scans:
Have your player juggle while briefly scanning the environment every 3–5 touches.
Encouragement for Parents:
Praise your kid for looking around, even if they mess up the next move. Vision takes time to train—but once it clicks, it’s game-changing.
