Beginner Soccer Gear for 5-Year-Olds (Coach Grandpa’s Guide)
Coach Grandpa always says: “The right gear makes soccer fun — not frustrating.” At age 5, kids are learning to dribble, pass, and run with confidence. The right ball size, shoes, and safety gear give them comfort and build excitement to keep playing.
Cleats vs. Sneakers for Kids Starting Soccer
Cleats: Provide better grip on grass and make kids feel “official.”
Sneakers: Fine for the first few practices, especially on turf.
Coach Grandpa Tip: Start with affordable cleats once your child shows interest — no need for fancy brands at this age.

Shin Guards
Non-negotiable for every practice and game.
For 5-year-olds, most parents pick slip-in shin guards with ankle protection — extra padding helps little legs stay safe.
But here’s the reality: my youngest doesn’t want the ankle guards. He insists on wearing the same style as his older brother (just plain slip-ins). And honestly, that’s okay — comfort and confidence matter too, as long as he’s wearing some protection.
Coach Grandpa Tip: Start with ankle protection if your child is brand new, then move to “big kid” slip-ins once they’re more confident.

What Size Soccer Ball Should a 5-Year-Old Use?
Kids under 8 should use a Size 3 soccer ball (smaller = easier to control).
Bonus: Easier to kick = more confidence when they score their “first goal.”
Must-Have Water Bottle for Young Soccer Players
Soccer = running nonstop. Hydration is crucial.
Get a lightweight, easy-squeeze bottle your child can open themselves.
Coach Grandpa Tip: Label it — every water bottle looks the same on the sideline.

Parent Takeaway
Investing in the basics — cleats, shin guards, a size 3 ball, and a water bottle — makes your child’s first season smoother and more enjoyable. Soccer at age 5 isn’t about winning; it’s about creating comfort, confidence, and fun.
Coach Grandpa says: “Keep it simple, keep it safe, keep it fun.”
